Our
work on conservation of rare, endangered and mangrove plants for the
past fifteen years has resulted in developing mass propagation (in vivo
and in vitro) methods, reintroduction to their original habitats and
training the local people and scientists in the conservation methodology.
MSSRF have so far developed protocols for mass propagation of many rare
and endangered species, such as Ceropegia jaini, Crololaria logipes,
Kaempferia glanga, Piper barberi, Rauwolfia micrantha, Syzygium travancoricum
and Uraria picta and a majority of mangrove species have field successfully
carried out field transfers. Using molecular marker systems, comprehensive
genetic fidelity analysis of the micro-propagated plants to confirm
their genetic uniformity and stability in the field conditions were
also assessed. MSSRF have also undertaken studies on ecological restoration
of degraded mangrove habitats. Establishment of field level Mangrove
Genetic Resources Centres is one of the major highlights of the programme.
Extensive training programmes on the nursery techniques, mist propagation,
plantation and plantation maintenance practices for rare, endangered
and mangrove plants as well as bioenergy and biofueld has been conducted
for the local NGOs and SHGs.
