The Uttara Devi Resource Centre in Gender and Development was set up in 1996-97 in the name of the late Uttara Devi, wife of the late Dr. B.V. Rao, by her family. It began functioning in October 1996 and was formally inaugurated in September 1997, on the occasion of the birthday of the late Uttara Devi. The original endowment of 25 lakhs has been added to by the family from time to time and now stands at Rs. 45.5 lakhs. Since 1999 funds from the Ford Foundation Endowment are also being used for the programme activities.

The two mandates, external and internal, are:
  • To promote the incorporation of gender issues and the concept of gender equity in research and action related to development, with special emphasis on rural and agricultural development and

  • To encourage, develop and maintain gender perspectives in all the activities and programmes undertaken by the Foundation.
