| Activity | Samiyarpettai is one of the coastal
villages of chidamabram, where we have been working to
provide Rehabilitation support to the Tsunami affected
people. Usually January to March is the catchment's season of Mathimeen by the fishing Community of this area. Mathimeen is available in plenty during this season. The Fishing communities of Samiyarpettai are able to sell only about 40 to 50 % of their fish harvested. The remaining 50% needs to be processed to be converted into dry fish. It is a seasonal activity, the Self Help Group members largely depend on local money lenders apart from the support they get from the Self Help Group savings and banks as loan. |

| There are 18 women Self Help Groups in samaiyarpettai consisting of about 360 members have come together and are operating as a village level federation. Each Self Help Group requires about Rs. 28,000 to 27,000/- to start this fish vending and Dry Fish business to sell in the up country market. There is a huge market for dry fish vending. The total requirement of these 18 Self Help Groups is Rs. 5,00,000/- (AUD.14,300 ). The group has taken interest free loan of Rs.84,000(AUD $ 2500)from this bank to meet the portion of their requirement of Rs.5,00,000. | |

| Activity | The Federation consists 11 Self Help Groups with 167 women members from Villages of Nembera and Balia in Kendarapara, Orissa one of the poorest state in India. The members of all the 11 SHG belong to Below Poverty Line group. Although, the women members are very enterprising. MSSRF has been working with these groups for the past 3 years. In our efforts to create an income earning opportunity for these people, in 2006 we decided to give loan of Rs.5, 28,000(from Friends of Swaminathan Australia) to the 4 members to each of the eleven groups to promote Dairy activity and tie up their marketing with the Orissa Milk Federation Society (OMFED). Presently the Society is running with quality and quantity of milk from 80 beneficiaries and daily collection of milk is more than 200 litres in two times and extra income from 44 cows is Rs. 40,150. Totally they had raised their Income from the individual dairy unit to the tune of Rs. 670,150. Members had successfully repaid the loan and also having their own cow and one calf. Due to this, there socio economic status was changed. |

| Now again the group proposed to start multiple enterprises (Individual dairy, Tent house, Rice mill, Pump set and grocery shop) for the remaining members from the 8 groups of the federations. The enterprises will provide an income earning opportunity for the group members; this income will help them in improving their economic status and in providing their children with better nutritious food, education and housing. | |
