SHGs of Kodathur, K.Manaveli
and Kaikelaipattu villages in Pondicherry have started
Dairy activity. The groups have gone on exposure visit
to Hatsun Agro Product Ltd at Salem a Private Modern Dairy
Unit. They have also attended several training programmes
on Dairy Management. They have entered into agreement
with Hatsun Agro Product Ltd., for supply of milk. . Hatsun
makes payment for the milk procured once in 15 days into
the groups savings account with the SBI. |

| StateBank of India, Pondicherry
had provided loan to the groups to buy 86 cows at the
rate of Rs. 12,500/- each. The groups are only 8 to 10
months old and have savings of around Rs.4000/ on an average.
Each group required some amount as loan in order to be
eligible to get the loan from SBI. Friends of MSSRF Multiple
Donors Bank had given an interest-free loan of Rs. 453,000
($9000) to enable the group to access bank credit of Rs.
25,00,000 ($50,000) The Project was inaugurated by Dr.
Bruce Alberts, President national Defence Academy in Jan
2004. |

and are in good demand. This enterprise had provided an
income earning opportunity for the group members; this
income helped them in improving their economic status
and in providing their children with better nutritious
food, education and housing. |

The Eco-friendly vehicle
was purchased by the SHG by availing loan from Indian
bank for Rs. 3,88,000/- in Jan 2003. It is operated as
public transport vehicle between Thirukanchi village and
Villianur. It is very popular, especially, among women
and school going children for it comfortable and smooth
ride. On an average the group is having a collection of
Rs. 900/ per day operating the vehicle. They have paid
loan installments in advance to the bank. The current
outstanding is only Rs. 1,13,000/- . They have taken a
loan to meet their operating expenses. How ever the group
has decided to sell the vehicle as maintenance cost is
increasing, due to wear and tear to the vehicle because
of excessive use than permitted by the manufacturer of
the vehicle. |

of this group are tribalsand they had repaid the loan

months during festive season by putting-up a stall in

Terracotta doll making is a traditional skill which has
been turned into a commercial business. Now this skill
is passed on to others through training.This enterprise
had provided an income earning opportunity for the group
members; this income will help them in improving their
economic status and in providing their children with better

The members of this group
have chosen Goat Rearing as it is giving assured income.
Goat Rearing is a renumerative business in this part of
Kerela. Rearing Goat is like having cash on Hand. There
is continuous demand for Goats and it fetches good price.
The group members will multiply the Goats and keeping
the younger ones will sell the older goats and this process
gives a regular source of income for them.
1. Technology – The group has undergone training on Goat
Rearing at our Agrobiodiversity Centre. Because of the
success of the other groups in Rearing Goats the above
mentioned groups who have gained confidence to start this
business, to replicate it.
2. Market – There is sufficient demand for Goat through
out the year and Goats fetches good price in all seasons.
There is a slight “lull” in the market during Ramzan Fasting
days
3. Credit – The groups bringing 25% has their in investment
only the remaining amount is being given as loan.
4. Management – Continuous facilitation will be provided
by MSSRF
The enterprise has provided an income earning opportunity
for the group members; this income will help them in improving
their economic status and in providing their children
with better nutritious food, education and housing. |
