  • Study the effect of climate hange on the false trevally (Lactarius lactarius) fishery
  • Study the present status of fishery.
 
Methodology
 
  • Collection of fisheries data from
    - Fisheries department
    - Research centers
  • Gathering information through interviews with

    • - Villagers (Fishermen)
    - Middlemen
    - Selected group of consumers (Urban)

  • Identification of pre-existed fishing grounds through interviews with local fishermen
  • Collection of landing data (Survey and data collection from the fisheries department)

Now
Over 10 tons per day during peak season 150 kg per day during peak season.
Fishing at depths of 2-5 fathoms Fishing at depths over 20 fathoms
Country crafts had good catches
(300-500kg).
 Country crafts do not get Lactarius.
Exclusive fishery for False Trevary. No exclusive fishery.
 
Reason for Loss of Fishery
 
  • Lack of rainfall.
  • Lack of supply of food in the coastal waters.
  • Effect of El-Nino during 1998.
  • Destructive fishing practices combined with climatic factor.
