Launch of WWF Report and Panel Discussion on
IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON GLOBAL FISHERIES

Prof.M.S.Swaminathan's (Chairman, MSSRF) Speech

  • Though climate change has some advantage, like more crop yield due to increased carbon-di-oxide generation, the disadvantages are more and adverse.
  • Climate change adding to the already existing threats, like pollution, unsustainable fishers, etc., will cause serious damage to the "Fish for All and For Ever" movement.
  • Harmony should be achieved among agriculture and inland aquaculture for better conservation of sustainable fisheries.
  • Institutional intellectual resources to be pooled together to conserve fisheries; both species specific and ecosystem specific conservation programmes are necessary.
  • India has an "Exclusive Economic Zone" (EEZ) of 2 million square kilometres and we should take advantage of both inland and marine fisheries and captive and culture fisheries, for promoting livelihood and nutrition security.
