Ninaivugal" (The
Lives of Aravanis - a glimpse) |
| |
| by Kannadi Kalaikuzhu |

When
Arjuna refused to accept the love of Urvasi she
cursed him to become a "eunuch" (Transgender person).
This curse came handy when the Pandavas had to
spend a year in incognito. But for "them" this
has become only a curse. Brihannala was the name
of Arjuna when he turned in to a eunuch, but the
society calls "them" by many undignified names.
Today "they" prefer to call themselves Aravanis. |
| |
| "They" do not have
any legal status, ration cards, voter id card,
driving license or any basic human rights - civil,
social, political. To voice "their"
feelings and to fight for "their" basic
human rights "they" have joined hands
in the name "Kannadi Kalaikuzhu" (a
theatre group of Aravanis) formed and run by themselves
in Tamil Nadu, through "Sudar Foundation".
The group is the first of its kind in India. Since
early 2004, "Voicing Silence", a project
in feminist theatre of MSSRF, has been working
with aravanis. "Voicing Silence" helped
them to set up "Kannadi Kalaikuzhu"
and to develop their first play "Manasin
Azhaippu" (The Call of the Heart). The play
has been performed about thirty times already
in various locations in Tamil Nadu and has created
considerable awareness about their lives, issues
and rights. As an outcome of this theatre based
advocacy campaign, the aravanis today have achieved
several victories in the area of voter id, jobs,
training, housing and so on. |
| |
| Now they wish to share their
feelings, their lives and thoughts through a new
play, the second one, called "Uraiyadha Ninaivugal"
(The Lives of Aravanis - a glimpse) |
