SHGs of Kodathur, K.Manaveli and Kaikelaipattu villages in Pondicherry have started Dairy activity. The groups have gone on exposure visit to Hatsun Agro Product Ltd at Salem a Private Modern Dairy Unit. They have also attended several training programmes on Dairy Management. They have entered into agreement with Hatsun Agro Product Ltd., for supply of milk. . Hatsun makes payment for the milk procured once in 15 days into the groups savings account with the SBI.
StateBank of India, Pondicherry had provided loan to the groups to buy 86 cows at the rate of Rs. 12,500/- each. The groups are only 8 to 10 months old and have savings of around Rs.4000/ on an average. Each group required some amount as loan in order to be eligible to get the loan from SBI. Friends of MSSRF Multiple Donors Bank had given an interest-free loan of Rs. 453,000 ($9000) to enable the group to access bank credit of Rs. 25,00,000 ($50,000) The Project was inaugurated by Dr. Bruce Alberts, President national Defence Academy in Jan 2004.

It is operated as public transport vehicle between Thirukanchi village and Villianur. It is very popular, especially, among women and school going children for it comfortable and smooth ride. On an average the group is having a collection of Rs. 900/ per day operating the vehicle. They have paid loan installments in advance to the bank. The current outstanding is only Rs. 1,13,000/- . They have taken a loan to meet their operating expenses. How ever the group has decided to sell the vehicle as maintenance cost is increasing, due to wear and tear to the vehicle because of excessive use than permitted by the manufacturer of the vehicle.
