Kulumai Federation consists of 104 Self Help Groups with 1560 members in the Kannivadi region. Each SHG has got two representative in the Federation. The Federation has a savings of Rs.1,00,000/- from the contribution received from the groups.
By taking interest-free loan of Rs. 2,00,000/ they lent small amounts to the Groups to meet their urgent domestic, personal and business requirements.' Kulumai meets the banking needs of the groups at grassroot's level. From the profits earned they were able to repay the loan and meet the working expenses of the Federation.

The groups were formed Kaudasi, a reputed NGO working in Thanjavur on formation of SHGs and linking them with Banks. The groups are 2 years old and have regular saving habits and are homogenous. The SHG has started Gem cutting units. Gem cutting is traditional cottage industriy which has been a source of income and employment for people of Thanjavur and Trichy District. Both the groups have been in this business and have considerable experience. This loan would help them to purchase cutting and polishing machine, which will lead to employment and income to other members of the group. They work on job orders. The get gems in bulk from jewelers and merchants cut them in different shape and polish them with help of machines. The are being paid on piece rate by the merchants. More they work more the income. This will help the group members earn additional income .
Sustainable Self Help Group norms:
1. Technology – The group is already in business and has the necessary skill.
2. Market – Both income generating activity do not have marketing problem as they are working on job orders.
3. Management – VKC MSSRF will provide continuous facilitation by providing need-based capacity building training programmes.
This enterprise is providing an income earning opportunity for the group members; this income helped them in improving their economic status and in providing their children with better nutritious food, education and housing.The group is able to repay the loan installment regularly.
