| Voicing Silence |
| |
Voicing
Silence, launched in 1992, is an unique effort at gendered
theatre, with the objective of giving “voice to
the voiceless”. Aiming to be a catalyst in the
process of women’s awareness and empowerment,
theatre has been the primary medium of Voicing Silence’s
interventions. Theatre as a mode of intervention women's
behalf has meant departing from the conventional ways
of producing and staging plays. It has also meant addressing
modes of performance, idioms of expression and representations
of women, and using training in theatre as a source
of empowerment by articulating the perception and aspirations
of groups of women. From creation of the script through
improvisation and visualisation on to rehearsal, right
up to performance and relating to the audience, the
emphasis has been on collective functioning. Hence both
activist theatre and theatre activism have become important
in the work. Voicing Silence has also taken initiatives
to for a coming together of fellow theatre workers who
concentrate on gender-centred themes. This festival,
a celebratory coming together has been named KULAVAI,
a Tamil word for the ululation by women on festive occasions. |
