| Development of the “New Andamans” |
| Record of discussions with H E Prof Ram Kapse, Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. |
Andaman
and Nicobar Islands offer great potential for accelerated
economic development rooted in the principles of ecology,
and social and gender equity. The rich bioresources
of the Islands provide opportunities for creating more
jobs and wealth. The total population of the Islands
is about 4 lakhs and the low population density helps
to ensure the health of the ecosystem. The tribal population
is very receptive to new ideas and they live in harmony
with nature. The Islands also provide opportunities
for both inland and marine fisheries. |
| Among field crops, spices as well as fruits like banana, mango and sapota provide opportunities for income and value addition. The Botanical and Zoological Surveys of India have compiled information on the flora and fauna. The MSSRF has also carried out studies on the biodiversity in Nicobar Islands, in addition to detailed studies on the mangrove wealth of the Islands. Thus basic information for developing additional opportunities for income and jobs based on bioresources and ecotechnologies is available. |
