Safeguarding the agrobiodiversity heritage of Eastern Ghats: Prof M S Swaminathan

Chennai, May 08, 2017: Both the Western and Eastern Ghats are rich in agrobiodiversity. The Western Ghats agrobiodiversity heritage has received detailed scientific attention and documentation. The same is not true about Eastern Ghats. The Trustees of @MSSRF at their meeting held on May 05, 2017 therefore decided that steps may be taken to develop the MSSRF Centre at Jeypore (now known as Biju Patnaik Medicinal Plant Research and Training Centre) into an Eastern Ghats Agrobiodiversity Research and Training Centre in collaboration with the Central University of Koraput.

Moving from Food to Nutrition Security: Prof M S Swaminathan

Chennai, April 24, 2017: In 1986, both in my lecture at FAO and in a book on “Global Aspects of Food Production” I stressed the need for a change in emphasis from food security to nutrition security. I also defined nutrition security as “physical economic and social access to balanced diet, clean drinking water, sanitation and primary healthcare”. Further I stressed the need for a food based approach to nutrition security and not a drug based one. Now after 30 years, the concept of nutrition security is gaining ground.

Earth Day: Prof M S Swaminathan

Chennai, April 22, 2017: 22 April is commemorated all over the world as Earth Day. This is to acknowledge our indebtedness to Mother Earth for providing the essential life support systems such as land, water, forest, biodiversity and climate. This year also marks the beginning of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable development requires sustained attention to safeguarding and enriching our life support systems.

March 2017: For over 500 farm families of Kumta, in Dharward district, Karnataka, getting a video conference view of the stage function in another location was a unique experience. More important was the reason they came together – the unique rice variety known as ‘Kagga’ that shimmered in the foreground of the stage.
