Include farming activities under MNREGS

The benefits of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme can be applied to agriculture now to help farming activities and also to ensure benefits for 17 million people, writes Dr R Gopinath, Senior Scientist MSSRF, in an article published in The Hindu Tamil newspaper. The MNREGS or the Right to Work provides employment for 100 days in a year for one family member for activities that support public amenities, in rural areas. Sharing data on how the uptake of this scheme was just about 16 per cent during April 2020, the scope of intensifying this can have a double advantage.
