Feb 28, 2020: Many years ago, Jawaharlal Nehru mentioned that the future belongs to science and to those who make friendship with science. Science Day provides an opportunity for us to look back and look forward. On this day, we should agree to promote more inter-disciplinary cooperation in the field of scientific and technological research. I hope we will all try to promote the culture of science in our country, so that the unfortunate recent events in Delhi do not get replicated.
We need greater peace and understanding in all our Universities. It will therefore be appropriate to establish Universities for Peace on the model of the UN University for Peace functioning in Costa Rica. We can make a beginning with Auroville which was established to promote peace and understanding among nations and communities.
A few decades ago, our then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri coined the slogan, “Jai Kisan, Jai Jawan” to emphasise the role of farmers and soldiers in our nation’s well being. Later, Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee added the term, “Jai Vigyan to Jai Jawan and Jai Kisan”. Jai Vigyan is the pathway for food, ecological and livelihood security.
