Water Literacy in 19 languages – science communication initiative by MSSRF & ERRC

Chennai, February 5, 2018: Campaign modules on water literacy in 19 Indian languages are being planned as part of a joint initiative by MSSRF in partnership with Environmental Resources Research Centre (ERRC), Trivandrum. This initiative is unique, since it is the first time that such a massive science communication campaign, focused on ‘Sustainable Water Resource Management’ is being planned on a mission mode for the Indian population in their native languages.

As a first step, a primer on the campaign modules will be evolved through a one-day project design workshop at MSSRF in Chennai on Feb, 6, 2018. Prof. Achuthan Nair, Executive Director, ERRC, said they were glad to partner with MSSRF in this first of its kind exercise in the country.  Experts from Government, academia and civil society organizations working in the area of water conservation and management from across India are expected to attend the workshop. A series of module preparation efforts are planned over the next few months covering topics ranging from supply augmentation, demand management, water conservation to water governance.

The campaign aims to reach the general population in rural and in urban areas with simplified content on the various topics.  Audio broadcasting of content is also planned for wider reachability. The modules are intended to form the basis of school curricula on the subject.
