Seed, Soil and Food: Right and Responsibility
The Community Agrobiodiversity Centre of MSSRF, Wayanad is organising its fourth annual Community Seed Fest between February 23-25, 2018 at Puthoorvayal, Kalapetta. The annual fest aims to conserve local varieties and RET varieties of seeds. According to a study by the FAO, roughly 75% of plant genetic diversity has been lost worldwide since the 1990s. Farmers have left their sizable chunk local varieties and land races for genetically improved and high yielding varieties. Conservation of agro-biodiversity is important as it is the genetic materials for food, agriculture, source of human nutrition and climate resilient farming systems. Agro-biodiversity is at risk with the expansion of industrial agriculture all over the world.
The Community Seed Festival will discuss the changing concepts and policies of seed conservation and the spaces in which it can be integrated. The three day function will include Agrobiodiversity Exhibition, nutritive Food Fest, Innovative Farmers Meet, Seed Counter, FPO products exhibition besides a painting exhibition on Wayanad's changing landscape.
