Talk: ‘Genome engineering for a sustainable planet: From cereals to trees‘
Genome engineering technologies, especially those based on CRISPR-Cas systems, have revolutionized plant research and crop improvement. In this presentation, I will first give some snapshots of the technology innovations in this field. I will talk about my lab’s journey in the development of multiplexed CRISPR-Cas9 systems, multiplexed CRISPR-Cas12a systems, base editing systems, and CRISPR-Combo systems. I will also present some examples of using these powerful technologies for enhancing crops from cereals to trees.
Speaker: ‘Dr. Yiping Qi is a Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, USA. The Qi lab has developed multiple CRISPR systems for plant genome editing and transcriptome regulation, and these tools are made available at the public plasmid repository, Addgene. To date, Addgene has distributed about 3000 plasmids from Dr. Qi’s lab to over 600 labs in 375 institutions in 48 countries. Dr. Qi currently serves as the Chair of Plant Biotechnology section of Society of In Vitro Biology (SIVB). He is an Associate Editor for five journals, including Plant Biotechnology Journal and Plant Cell Reports. Dr. Qi’s recent recognitions include the National Science Foundation Plant Genome Early Career Award, the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) New Innovator Award, the SIVB Young Scientist Award, and the University of Maryland Invention of the Year Award. He is the most cited author in Nature Plants, and he has been recognized as a Web of Science Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate consecutively in the past 5 years.
