Talk: ‘Genomics for food and nutrition security: Striving to realise the vision of Bharat Ratna Dr. M.S.Swaminathan’

Paying tributes to Dr MS Swaminathan, Prof. Rajeev K Varshney’s lecture explored the crucial role of genomics in advancing food security and nutrition security. Present an overview of advances in understanding plant traits through genomics at the M S Swaminathan Centenary Series, he noted that given the global population boom, pressure on food production is tremendous. Dr Rajeev said that there is added tension from conflicts and geopolitical issues, and together with climate risks, it makes for a terrifying combination. He went to present examples of how genomics-assisted breeding can help tackle food and nutrition insecurities.
