Talk: ‘Essential Adaptation to Climate Change through Plant Breeding’

The fourth talk of the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary Lecture Series will be delivered by Prof V.K. Ramachandran, Vice Chairperson, Kerala State Planning Board, Government of Kerala. He spoke on the topic ‘Peasants and Rural Wage Workers in Contemporary India’, providing glimpses into the socio-economic condition of rural wage workers in India. He noted that the death of the peasantry as a social group is much exaggerated and still plays an essential role in the production process in India. Prof Ramachandran observed that agricultural labour has an all-India footprint, and encouraging the research community to further study local nuances and issues faced by agricultural labourers. He iterated that investigating on possible solutions for the peasantry will bring about relief to agricultural workers with the added benefit of bringing people together for social change.
