Talk: ‘Seeds On Ice: Conserving Crop Diversity So Our Children Can Eat‘
Dr Geoffrey Hawtin’s Lecture on ‘Seeds On Ice: Conserving Crop Diversity So Our Children Can Eat’ highlighted that crop diversity is threatened by climate change, deforestation, urbanisation; changing agri patterns, consumer demand, also war, natural disasters, etc. His presentation made recommendations for future gene banks in terms of expanding seed collection to wild relatives and opportunity crops, while also creating a stock pile of special trait collection for drought, heat, etc. He iterated that storing special genetic interest and mutants, plus linking to other collection systems, breeders, and farmers will be vital.
