District Level Awareness Workshops on INCOIS Services
Two workshops were held at Poompuhar, Mayiladuthurai district on March 14, and Keezhakarai in Ramanathapuram district on March 16 respectively, to create awareness around early warning and marine fishery advisory services offered by INCOIS. More than 200 fishers, both men and women, were in attendance. They had come from 60 fishing villages to listen to Dr Velvizhi and team from MSSRF’s Fish For All Centre as well as Dr. Srinivas, Scientist from INCOIS, speak about the various services from INCOIS. Fisheries stakeholders from Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department, Coastal security police, Indian Coast Guard, forest department officials, NGO representatives, Sathak Polytechnic officials, and Sagar Mithras also participated in the meeting, and shared their views. There was much interaction with MSSRF and INOCIS scientists. The discussion brought to the surface valuable observations and unique feedback on ocean conditions in the Gulf of Mannar region and surrounding island-areas for future research.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
