Dr Mohan Dharia Award money will be used for coastal ecological security: Prof Swaminathan
On the occasion of receiving the 2018 Mohan Dharia Rashtranirman Puraskar, Prof M S Swaminathan announced that the cash amount of Rs. 1 lakh associated with this prize will be utilised for creating Dr Mohan Dharia Award for Coastal Ecological Security. It is now clear that climate change is a reality and that one of its consequences will be sea level rise. We have to take anticipatory action to protect our coastal ecosystems like the mangrove ecosystem which have helped to minimise damage during tsunamis. Prof Swaminathan mentioned that the award amount will be given to a lady scholar studying at the University of Mumbai in the field of Life Science with particular attention to the conservation of mangrove germplasm along the Maharashtra coast. Mangroves promote both coastal ecological security and opportunities for aquaculture. The late Dr Mohan Dharia was very much concerned with the conservation of natural resources like land and water and this award will help to keep his conservation legacy alive.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
