A cyclone, science and the seas

A cyclone recently crossed the southern coast of India. People heaved a sigh since it caused minimum damage. However, more low pressure systems are evolving, reminding us to stay prepared. This e-synergy, focuses on participatory and anticipatory research that serves to protect lives and livelihoods of vulnerable coastal farming and fishing communities at times like these. These are also times when government machinery, community groups, development organizations and institutions like ours come together to strengthen resources.

In this special e-newsletter, we are pleased to share updates about the International Network of Emerging Library Innovators (INELI). Our World Food Day special e-newsletter comes on the 75th anniversary of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations; Also last week, the United Nations World Food Programme was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for efforts to combat hunger and food insecurity. The emphasis on building a food-secure world has intensified, especially in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Prof M S Swaminathan notes in his World Food Day 2020 message, "There is no time to relax. We should do everything possible to ensure sustainable food security."

Remembering contributions with gratitude

This is an issue of reminiscences and gratitude. We held a special condolence meeting on the life and contributions of one of our Founder-Trustees Prof V L Chopra whose work inspired scientists, practitioners and students. Also featured in this edition, are a special trip down memory lane by Prof Swaminathan on the genesis of MSSRF and the release of a manual on early childhood care dedicated to Mrs Mina Swaminathan. We'd love to hear your stories of association with us.

Awards, recognition and knowledge sharing

We were thrilled to hear the announcement of the World Food Prize for 2020 to Dr Rattan Lal, for his lifetime of work as a soil scientist. MSSRF had the good fortune to benefit from his expertise as a partner through Ohio State University. It was also heartening for us to find eight librarians from the INELI network that we lead across south Asia, featured in a global 'wall of fame' for their innovative work.

Building all-round Resilience of Farming Communities

A small intervention such as anticipating pest/disease attacks in agriculture, can make a big difference to smallholder farms. We focus this week on our work in Assam - building RESILIENCE - among farming communities through support of NIBIO and in partnership with IWMI and Assam Agricultural University and the rural communities of Sivasagar and Golaghat.

New Research: Lessons from wild rice

Out now, published research from a multi-country partnership studying salt tolerance in a unique wild rice species. Also published a new study on community response to disasters.
