Commemorating ‘’World Water Day”, events were held in three MSSRF locations of Kannivadi, Illupur and Villupuram. In Kannivadi, Dindigul district, a rally was organised on March 22, 2017, with a coalition of community groups, students, members of women SHG federation and the shareholders of farmer producer company. The event brought together men and women marching for water security, both for agriculture and household purposes. The aim of this rally was to bring awareness and visibility of existing water crisis, call for commitment and action for safe drinking water and water for agriculture.
Over 100 people took part in the rally that was flagged off by Mr L Sanjeevi, Assistant General Manager, NABARD. Participants took an oath at the start of the rally related to saving water. They declared their participation in managing the water bodies, drip and sprinkler irrigation techniques, mulching technology, reusing water for garden, tree planting, rainwater harvesting and removal of Prosopis juliflora from this region.
Special invitees besides Mr Sanjeevi Included A. Malairajan, President, Kulumai SHG Federation and Shri. T.Rajasekaran, Managing director, RESAPCOL.
At the end of the rally, an oath taking signing event was also organized for public in which students, youngsters, men and women farmers participated and signed on the board kept in the central bus stand.
In Illupur, Pudukkotai district, the World Water Day celebrations took place on March 20, 2017. There was a farmers’ interaction organised to discuss about the various issues and concerns on water and conservation methods. 47 progressive farmers (31 women and 16 men) participated in the discussion. Mr. Vijayarangan, Dr. Rajeswari and Mr. Thachinamurthy explained the present global and local scenerio of water scarcity and need to adopt the innovative water conservative methods in agriculture and water reusage. A similar function was organised in Villupuram district too.
In another event in Pudukottai district, a function was organised to spread the message of water conservation to students. Dr Rajakumar, Prinicipal Scientist, IEC, MSSRF spoke on the occasion.
