MSSRF celebrates World Wetlands Day with communities
February 2 marks World Wetlands Day and to commemorate the day, an awareness meeting was organised by MSSRF in Chinagollapalem, Andhra Pradesh. Mr S Venkatasatyanarayan, Member of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency and Mr Koppada George, Ward Member of Village Panchayat, spoke about the importance of mangroves for the socio-economic development of the fisher community. They appreciated the efforts put by MSSRF and HCL in protecting the village from erosion. 40 members participated in the event. The community members undertook plantation programmes on intertidal mudflats and about 2,500 saplings of Rhizophora were planted.
Similarly, in Kuttandu, an awareness programme was held in Government High School Thekkekara, Kuttanad Taluk, Alappuzha, to iterate the importance of wetland and biodiversity conservation. Teachers and school students participated in the event that was organised by MSSRF.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
