Exploring the unmined microbial richness of the mangrove ecosystem
The Microbial activity of mangrove biome is less explored and directly involved in the biogeochemical cycling of this ecosystem. The genetic and functional diversity of rhizosphere associated microbes of Avicennia marina and Rhizophoramucronata of Pichavaram mangroves was assessed. The culturable and unculturable diversity of total bacterial community, nitrogen cycling communities, sulphur cycling -dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) biosynthesis and catabolism, actinomycetes, acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) producing bacteria was also examined.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
