Management of Mangrove Restored Area nearNTPC TamilNadu Energy Company Limited(NTECL)
Location: Ennore estuary (Koratallaiyar estuary)
M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) is implementing a project on Mangrove restoration and afforestation in the degraded area near the NTECL, Ennore with the support of NTECL. NTPC – Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited has established a 1,500MW joint venture thermal power plant at Vallur in Ponneri Taluk, Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. The power plant is located in the northern side of the Ennore estuary (Koratallaiyar estuary) between Ennore Creek and AthipattuPudhu Nagar Railway station at a Latitude 130 13’ 45” N and Longitude 800 18’ 05” E. The estuarine area has natural mangroves along the creeks and Prosopis in the elevated mudflats. The mangroves receive tidal water through the main creek. Avicennia marina is the dominant species, and the height of the plants is between 1.5 – 2.5 m. MSSRF restored 15 ha of degraded mangroves along the Koratalaiar estuary between Jan 2018-Dec 2020. NTECL sanctioned a second project for maintaining the plantation till Dec 2022.
Objectives of the project
To maintain the canals by desilting and replacing the causalitiesto sustain higher survival rate
An area of 15.1 ha of degraded mangroves completely restored with maximum survival percentage of saplings.
The natural regeneration of the saplings established in the restored area to have a more dense mangrove cover to protect from the disasters and provide the ecosystem services
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
