MSSRF revives salt tolerant Kagga rice landrace in Karnataka
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) has been revived the traditional salt tolerant Kagga rice landrace unique to Aghanashini estuary, Uttar Kannada, Karnataka. It was once cultivated in large tracts, but has diminished due to non-availability of good quality seeds and lack of modern agro-technologies for its cultivation. The farmer’s landrace has been purified in collaboration with UAS Dharwad, with the participation of farmers and now has been adopted by over 200 farmers in Manikatta village, Kumta Block, Karnataka.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
