Chennai, April 22, 2017: 22 April is commemorated all over the world as Earth Day. This is to acknowledge our indebtedness to Mother Earth for providing the essential life support systems such as land, water, forest, biodiversity and climate. This year also marks the beginning of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sustainable development requires sustained attention to safeguarding and enriching our life support systems. Therefore it will be appropriate if all our panchayats and grassroot democratic bodies as well as universities promote a Guardians of the Earth Programme in order to ensure that our natural assets are protected for the needs of the population of today and tomorrow. The major role of such Guardians will be spreading environmental literacy and proactive action.
