Commitment to Human Happiness: Prof M S Swaminathan
Chennai, July 16, 2016: The Madhya Pradesh Government deserves praise for establishing a Happiness Department. It was the former King of Bhutan who first developed the concept of Gross National Happiness as a measure of the progress of a nation. This is in the place of the commonly used GDP. Bhutan has also developed a Happiness Index. What is now important is to indicate very clearly what should be the measure of happiness at the state level, so that the Happiness Department can draw a plan of action. In my view, the essential criteria for happiness are gender balance at birth (ratio of males and females), income, employment, health and nutrition security and opportunities for sharing one’s intellectual and material gifts with fellow citizen, i.e. the growth of voluntarism.
