Goa : Dawn of Eco-civilization: Prof M S Swaminathan
February 22, 2016: Goa was well known for combining natural beauty with human destruction. The destruction was largely due to mining activities. In 1982 I chaired a Committee which gave a report on Eco-Development of Goa. The strategy included ecological mining methods and conservation of biodiversiy. Normally nothing happens after such reports are presented but I saw with great happiness of the eco-regeneration of the hilly and mining areas. Recently , I had an opportunity to travel by helicopter from Panaji to Oras in Konkan area and I noted that erosion of natural resources caused by human activity was far less. This is a good beginning of the eco-development decade and I do hope that both the government of the people of Goa will take pride in being leaders of eco-development including ecological mining.
