Prof M S Swaminathan received the Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa) awarded by the Panjab University in Chandigarh from the President of India on 14th March, this year at Chandigarh. The other noted persons who received their honorary doctorates at the 64th convocation included noted mathematician Dr Manjul Bhargava and Nobel Laureate, Shri Kailash Satyarthi.
During a media interaction prior to the convocation, Prof Swaminathan, emphasized the need to give greater importance to farmers. “Earlier the world saw us as famished people with empty bowls. Farmers have given India dignity. But we will have to protect both agriculture and the farmer if we are to feed 150 crore people by 2030,” he said.
Speaking at the convocation, President Shri Pranab Mukherjee said, “Our academic institutions must take active part in these initiatives. They should adopt at least five villages and leverage all academic and other resources to offer solutions to their problems and develop them as model villages.”
Prof Swaminathan also delivered the Prof Shivram Kashyam Memorial Oration Award Lecture at the University.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
