We celebrate Pongal day to pay our homage to the Sun, moon and green plants which convert the solar energy into food through photosynthesis. Sugarcane is usually chosen as the plant to worship since it is a most efficient converter of solar energy into food. It is these habits which have been able to protect our life supporting resources. Pongal is therefore a very important harvest festival safeguarding our food security. We may salute, every day, the Sun, the green plants and our farmers’ for making it possible for us to safeguard our food security systems.
