Streamlining paddy procurement: Prof M S Swaminathan
Chennai, August 6, 2016: Paddy is the most important food crop in Tamil Nadu and its importance will grow in an era of climate change. This is because paddy has more adaptation capacity under different environmental conditions. The crop grows from below sea level in Kuttanad to several thousand meters high in Kashmir. Therefore, the initiative of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in introducing an e-procurement scheme is both timely and laudable. E-procurement will help to minimise delay in payment as well as corruption. I hope gradually this system can be extended to other crops particularly pulses where we require speedy progress in production. The monsoon and the market are the major determinants of farmers’ well-being and initiatives like those taken by Tamil Nadu will help to stabilise the income of farmers and ensure that they receive the announced MSP.
