Tablets to help fisherwomen groups connect with digital markets
Post-harvest literacy among Tamil Nadu fisherwomen takes priority on World Fisheries Day
On November 21, World Fisheries Day was celebrated by MSSRF’s Fish for all Centre at Poompuhar, by launching exclusive audio advisory services for Tamil Nadu fisherwomen on post-harvest fisheries. The programme was presided over by Dr G N Hariharan, Executive Director, MSSRF. A total of 115 participants from 29 coastal villages took part, including key stakeholders from the Department of Fisheries, Indian Coastal Guard, District Industrial Centre, bank officials, Panchayat leaders from the coastal villages, active fishers and fish farmers.
The initiative to provide audio advisory services for women involved in post-harvest fisheries work is designed to bridge the digital divide while strengthening the socio-economic resilience of fisherwomen. It also aims to maximize income potential and alleviate the burdens associated with post-harvest activities. All this makes a significant contribution to the economic empowerment of coastal communities in Tamil Nadu.
Tablets were distributed to the fisherwomen Self-Help Group members so as to promote post-harvest literacy. The device will help to connect these women groups with digital markets, and foster knowledge on digital marketing and finances. Farm inputs were distributed to the fish farmers during the event.
Dr Hariharan, in his key note address, expressed interest in exploring ways to incorporate advanced technologies in fishing to increase efficiency and sustainability.
Dr Velvizhi, Head – MSSRF Fish for All Centre, spoke about the contribution of the Centre in sustaining and empowering the livelihood of fishers, and the various measures to conserve fisheries resources through the collective approach and co-management method.
