The Tamil Ratna Award instituted by the News7 Tamil television channel was conferred on Prof M S Swaminathan for his lifetime contribution to agriculture and food security, the award was presented by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Thiru. Edappadi K Palanisamy.
The CM of Tamil Nadu while delivering his presidential address honoured Prof Swaminathan, by highly acclaiming him for his contributions in the field of agriculture development. He spoke “Our country was lagging behind in food production, even importing food grains to feed its people. Prof Swaminathan played a vital role in revolutionising the food production and thus now honoured as the ‘Father of Green Revolution in India.’ He has held various important positions around the globe and has received various prestigious national and international awards that include the ‘Padma Shri’ and the ‘Padman Bhushan’. In India, 38 universities have awarded Honorary Doctorates to him and he has received 41 prestigious national awards.” He also said that the young generation should follow his pathway contributing to the development of the Nation.
Many other eminent personalities were conferred with awards for the achievements in their respective fields on this occasion. This specific award ceremony organised by the Tamil news Channel News 7 was to recognise and respect the work of personalities who contribute outstandingly in their fields of work in Tamil Nadu. Ms B Jayashree, Director of Communication at MSSRF represented the Foundation and received the award for Prof Swaminathan, who was not able to attend the ceremony due to unavoidable circumstances.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
