Three villages have community seed banks in Koraput District
Under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY)-funded project – Strengthening Livelihoods and Enhancing Food and Nutrition Security of Small and Marginal Farmers in Koraput District of Odisha and with the Farming System Model (FSM), three community-level Seed Banks were established by MSSRF Biju Patnaik Tribal AgroBiodiversity Centre at Jeypore, to ensure safe storage of seeds and easy access for the farming communities. The villages are: Ramaguda, Khadakiaguda, and Goipadar located in Boipariguda Block, Koraput district.
Cluster level Seed Bank Management committees were also formed for the smooth operation of the Community Seed Banks. 13 village people (men and women) are now committee members for the Khadakiaguda seed bank, and there are 11 members each for Ramaguda and Goipadar community seed banks.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
