Women’s Biotech Park – a unique initiative to nurture women entrepreneurs: Prof M S Swaminathan
Chennai, February 24, 2017: A Golden Jubilee Women’s Biotechnology Park was established at Chennai and became operational in 2001. The major aim of the Park was to provide opportunities for educated young women to take to a career of market driven self-employment in the broad field of biotechnology. During the last 15 years, the Park has stimulated the growth of outstanding women entrepreneurs. Its facilities have now been enlarged with addition of an incubation centre. In order to promote the creation and nurturing of women tech-entrepreneurs, a workshop is being held on 27th Feb under the join sponsorship of the National Academy of Sciences and, the Biotech Consortium India Limited. This workshop will also consider the kind of support systems including credit needed by women entrepreneurs. This is a major initiative for providing women entrepreneurs with opportunities for becoming technology generators and disseminators. Thanks are due to the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, the Biotech Consortium India Limited and the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation for their invaluable role in developing this Park which is at the moment the only one of its kind in India. The Women’s Biotech Park has generated considerable interest not only in India but also in many other countries since such Parks associated with universities could help to equip educated women with the art and science of promoting biotechnological enterprises of great interest in the fields of agriculture, industry and environment. This kind of facility will provide an opportunity to recognize the hidden talents of women and enrich the country with their qualities which are underutilized and may not otherwise be recognized.
