Chennai, April 7, 208: Today is World Health Day and the theme for 2018 is “Universal health coverage : everyone, everywhere”. Recently Prof P C Kesavan and I had published a paper in Current Science on this topic (http://www.currentscience.ac.in/Volumes/112/12/2379.pdf). Health for all can be achieved more speedily if agriculture, nutrition and health are brought together in an interactive manner. A purely drug based approach will not help unless it becomes food cum drug approach. Food for all is basic to health for all.
The concept of health should become holistic and should include attention to mental health in addition to physical health. The principles of Ayurveda which look at health problems in a holistic manner should be combined with the Allopathic medicine. In other words, integration of ayurveda and allopathy and agriculture, nutrition and health will be the low cost and most effective method of achieving the goal of today’s World Health Day.
M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) established in 1988 is a not-for-profit trust. MSSRF was envisioned and founded by Professor M S Swaminathan, agriculture scientist with proceeds from the First World Food Prize that he received in 1987.
